Fishing Season 2010 - Let’s hope it’s a good one !

Jo McGhee on March 2nd, 2010

Chris & I would like to thank all those fishermen who have kindly booked with us already this year.  It has been an encouraging start to the year.

Several fishermen have asked me about an old buzzer pattern called “Bell’s Buzzer”, named after Captain Bell who used to live in Blagdon.  We thought we would share this information with you - you never know it might be the little gem you have been looking for!

Bell’s Buzzer, after entries by C.F. Walker in “lake flies and their imitation”.

Abdomen:  Gut or nylon in “varying shades, taking note of the predominant colours at each period of the year and thicknesses to match the larvae”.  Dyed shades include “insect green (Dylon shade 72)”, claret (Dylon shade 30), “arterial blood red (Dylon shade 86)”, orange (Dylon shade 55).

Thorax:  Ostrich, condor or peacock herl – natural.

Wing buds:  Badger hackle tied as a beard so that the ends of the black section of the hackle correspond to the end of the thorax.  The white fibres are then clipped to form the correct profile of the wing buds while maintaining a white edge.

Hook:  Redditch “new scale 00 – 3 (18-10 standard sizes), downturned eye.

We hope you have a good fishing season - tight lines.

Chris & Jo

Party of fishermen 1st - 3rd April

Jo McGhee on April 6th, 2009

We had the pleasure of a group of fishermen staying with us for a few days from Southampton.  Blagdon lake was fishing well with them catching their limit on diawl bachs and black buzzers.  Bank fishing was better than boat fishing with fish being in the shallows.  North Shore, Pegs Point and Green Lawn proved most successful.  A good time was had by all and we look forward to them staying with us again soon.

Satisfied Customer

Jo McGhee on April 1st, 2009

Just wanted to share the views of a happy fishermen who has recently stayed with us:

Hi Jo, Ain’t life fantastic ‘eh’? The fact of just Emailing you has put me in such a good mood after sharing a wonderful few days with you, Chris and your staff, who now feel like part of my family. Jenny’s dinners, Keith’s Breakfast, Elain’s smile and after spending half an hour with Tracy, I now know the history of all residents in Blagdon! (Some of this info I will be using for blackmail purposes to help fund my next visit with you.) Please convey Gunther and my thanks to all and I look forward with great anticipation to letting you all pamper and wait on me hand and foot again.

The attachment is a photo of myself as asked, and as most people tend to send flattering pictures, I hope this one of myself will not disappoint.

(others can be sent if required). Every time I drive up for the day to fish Blagdon or Chew I will definitely pop in, even if its just for a pint but my preference will be to stay.  I will Email you on occasions with things I hope you will enjoy and please feel free to do the same.

Fondest regards   Bob Hickman.

March 23rd - Opening Day for Blagdon Lake

Jo McGhee on January 21st, 2009

We are looking forward to the beginning of the trout fishing season, with Opening Day being on Monday 23rd March 2009.

Two years on from taking on the Seymour Arms and our hard efforts in building up the pub’s a reputation as a “friendly fishermen’s pub” seems to be paying off.

Thank you to all fishermen who have stayed with us in the past for already booking to stay with us again this year.  The month of May seems to be particularly popular and encouraging.

We are looking forward to seeing you all again soon.
